Taco Thursday Presents: Eat it or Beat it- SlimCados!

A lot of Mexican dishes call for avocado and it is a great “power food” that you can use to top sandwiches or just eat with a spoon. But are all avocados the same??

While shopping at Publix, we came across something called a SlimCado next to the actual Hass avocados. The SlimCados were $1.00 while the avocados were a $1.50, so I said, “What the heck, we’ll give it a whirl.”

At first, you notice that the SlimCado is much bigger than an actual avocado, but that is about all you can tell from the outside. When you cut it open, not only do you see that the seed takes up about half the inside, but I noticed that the SlimCado had a more yellow color to it compared to the green of an avocado.

Using my nifty avocado scooper, it is actually much easier to get out the insides than the smaller, regular avocados because the tool fits into the bigger SlimCado easier.

Upon a taste test though, I really felt that the SlimCado didn’t provide as much flavor as an actual avocado. I like the fact that it is cheaper and provides more substance, but if it doesn’t taste as good, I don’t think it is worth it. So, upon review, we say- BEAT IT! I did find out that the SlimCado supposedly has half the fat and a third of the calories of a regular avocado, so you have to decide what is most important to you- taste or health.

Have you ever tried a SlimCado? Any other engineered fruits or veggies that were a good substitute?
